A Physiobic training session lasts for 60 minutes. It comprises
of two pulse increasing phases, with stretching and power
exercises in between. The sessions are concluded with relaxing
motions for the neck and shoulder, stretching and a final
relaxation. The physiotherapist may devote ten minutes at
the beginning of the session to questions on health education,
ergonomy and a group discussion. Small groups allow individual
guidance.
The simple exercise motions of Physiobic are easy for beginners
and small groups of ten people or less, allow the instructor
to give participants individual guidance. The simple exercises
are the same from one session to another, allowing participants
to learn the correct way to do them. The exercises are also
easy to do at home.
Music is an important part of Physiobic. Carefully chosen
music facilitates the exercise motions and aids performance.
Music makes the heavier exercises easier and provides fun
and inspiration for the demanding parts of the exercise. The
right music is relaxing and inspiring and it makes participants
enjoy the exercise.
Physiobic Education Program
Physiobic training has been provided in Finland since 1986.
Physiotherapist Marianne Kyrklund has created
Physiobic Education Program for Physiotherapists in Finland.
It means that after a two-day basic Physiobic course Physiotherapist
will be Physiobic instructor and she will get both the Physiobic
logo and the name in her use. Marianne has educated all Physiobic
instructors and her company, Suomen Terveysliikuntainstituutti
Ltd, has the register of instructors.
Follow-up courses are arranged yearly like Physiobic
Convention, PhysioPump, PhysioBalance, AquaBic,
MotherBic and OsteoBic. At the present there are
about 4000 Physiobic instructors in Finland. There are Physiobic
groups in several rehabilitation centres, health centres and
baths as well as work place groups under the auspices of occupational
health programs.
Physiobic may be prescribed by a doctor.
Physiobic is often a continuation of individual physiotherapy,
and thus a way to strengthen therapy results. It can also
be a preventive activity and designed to maintain work capacity
or early rehabilitation. Physiobic may be prescribed by a
doctor and part of the cost is thus covered by health insurance.
The concept of Physiobic has been established in a number
of places in Finland and physicians often recommend Physiobic
as a relevant self care method for patients with orthopaedic
complaints.
Physiobic motto: Good exercise is healthy and also
fun.
